Born 1989 in New Jersey Charles Sommer received his BFA at the University of South Florida and an MFA from Brooklyn College. He has been included in group shows at galleries such as the Tjaden Gallery at Cornell Universty, SOIL Gallery (Seattle), Trestle Gallery (Brooklyn) and has an upcoming solo show at the Anna Leowens Gallery at NSCAD University (Halifax). Charles has attended the Vermont Studio Center and will be a resident at Wassaic Projects in May 2019. Charles' work is also included in private as well as public collection including the collection at Van Every|Smith Galleries at Davidson College. The work I am creating is an investigation into an alternate universe and world of my own construction. With drawing as my point of departure I mine real life accounts of mysterious events with equally compelling fictive stories of the future and ancient past and attempt to make drawings that hold the same sort of metaphysical power. The work connects disparate elements and ideas about space and how they can be depicted, often moving between representational, pictorial image and abstract forms.
