Matthew Bainbridge (b. 1992, Jarrow, UK) graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2014 with a first class BA(Hons) in painting & printmaking. He continued to live and work in Scotland until 2018, most recently exhibiting in 'The Benefits of Being Under the Weather' at Patriothall Gallery, 'A Shallow Thing' at The Number Shop and 'Fever Dreams' at Summerhall Visual Arts Centre. He is currently based in Montreal, Canada. Bainbridge draws from the evolving pools of personal reflection as a source for image-making, paying particular due diligence to the act of making itself, the persistence of taste and the assimilation of irl experiences. Ideas of aspiration, contemporaneity, perceived intellectual fecundity and boredom manifest themselves in visuals that are at once as erudite as they are dumb, colourful conduits to otherwise blunt expressions of everyday banalities such as video games, day jobs, deodorant and takeaway menus. Hi-res images of works are available from the artist upon request.
