Daniel Gerwin makes autobiographical abstractions relating to his experience as a father of young children. Parenthood informs and infuses all his paintings in their vibrant color, playfulness, and occasionally chaotic compositions. Gerwin’s paintings are eccentrically shaped, reflecting the unpredictability and disorderliness of real life. Each work’s title hints at its diaristic nature and events driving the painting. Gerwin includes passages of trompe l’oeil wood grain in his work as an allusion to hardwood floors, dinner tables, and furniture. These references place his paintings in the psychic space of home, a site of domestic dramas and endless quotidian moments. Gerwin’s paintings have been shown most recently at 326 Gallery in New York, and he has had solo and group exhibitions throughout the country. His work has been reviewed in ArtCritical, Frieze, Hyperallergic, and other publications. Gerwin curated an exhibition of contemporary shaped painting at the Klowden Mann gallery in Los Angeles, July-August 2018. He has taught painting, drawing, and theory, and has written about contemporary art for Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, and Hyperallergic. His writing has also been published in ArtCritical, Blog of the LA Review of Books, The Huffington Post, On-Verge (CUE Foundation), Machete, and Title Magazine. He received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and his BA from Yale University. He has taught at University of California Davis, University of the Arts, University of Iowa, and University of Pennsylvania. In 2004 he was awarded a residency at Blue Mountain Center, and in 2016 he was a Resident Fellow at the MacDowell Colony.
