Jimmy Viera is a painter and printmaker born in Dartmouth, MA. He currently lives and works in Portland, ME. He received his BFA in Printmaking from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2014, where he was awarded the 2D Department’s Award for Excellence. Viera has shown work at Buoy, Gallery 57, Tia/Nacul Gallery, Baklar Gallery, and Space, among others. He also curated Periscope at Able Baker Contemporary in 2017. In 2016, Viera helped co-found the New England Art Book Fair which, in it’s three years, has showcased book makers from across the country to thousands of visitors. Viera’s paintings serve as faux spaces in which gestures and shapes sit on the panels the way ephemera, imbued with fond memories, sit in people’s homes. Looking through sketchbooks for the right gestures, Viera acts as a collector adding items to shelf. Both the collector and Viera layer items from different times and places. By taking a wobbly line made today and placing it in a painting with a cylindrical shape he made three months ago, Viera is able to collage gestures into a piece with more history than if it had been just painted intuitively.
